XM Leverage Explained: Limits by Equity, Changes During News and Gold Leverage

XM offers leverage up to 1:1000 on its offshore entity, but the maximum you actually get depends on three things: your account equity, the instrument you trade, and which XM entity your account belongs to. Leverage can also be reduced automatically — for example when your equity crosses a threshold, or temporarily around major news and holiday periods. This page explains the tiers, how gold is treated, and what to do when your leverage suddenly changes.

The short answer: XM leverage depends on equity, entity and instrument

XM is not one single broker but a group of entities. Trading Point entities regulated by CySEC and ASIC serve clients in regions where retail leverage is capped by law (typically 1:30 on major forex pairs). XM Global Limited, regulated by the Belize FSC, serves most other regions and offers leverage up to 1:1000 — as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site. Bonuses and leverage differ by entity, so always check which entity your account is opened under and confirm the conditions on XM’s official website.

Within XM Global, your maximum leverage is tiered by account equity. The more money you hold across your XM accounts, the lower the maximum leverage XM allows. On top of that, some instruments carry their own fixed margin requirements regardless of your account leverage setting.

Note that XM does not accept residents of certain jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, Israel and Iran. You must check your own eligibility and local regulations before opening an account.

Leverage tiers by equity, gold leverage, and changes during news

Equity-based leverage tiers

XM Global applies the following tiers. Equity is measured across all your trading accounts under the same profile, not per account. All figures are as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site.

Total equity (USD or equivalent) Maximum leverage Approx. margin for 1 standard lot EURUSD (at 1.10)
$5 – $40,000 1:1000 $110
$40,001 – $80,000 1:500 $220
$80,001 – $200,000 1:200 $550
Above $200,000 1:100 $1,100

The important practical point: if a deposit or a profitable run pushes your total equity above a threshold, XM can lower your account leverage automatically. When that happens, the margin requirement on your open positions increases, which reduces your free margin and brings you closer to margin call and stop-out levels even though nothing changed in the market.

Gold (XAUUSD) leverage

Gold is one of the most searched instruments at XM because, unlike many brokers, XM generally allows gold to follow your account leverage setting up to the maximum tier — as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site. In other words, if your account is set to 1:1000 and your equity is within the top tier, gold margin is calculated at that leverage.

Other metals (such as silver, platinum and palladium), indices, energies and shares typically have their own fixed margin requirements that do not follow your account leverage. Always check the instrument’s specification in MT4/MT5 (right-click the symbol in Market Watch → Specification) to see the actual margin rule before you trade.

High leverage on gold cuts both ways. Gold routinely moves several dollars in minutes around US data releases. At 1:1000, a small account can open a position whose per-pip value is large relative to equity, and a normal intraday swing can trigger a stop-out. Higher leverage never increases your probability of winning; it only changes how fast your equity moves in either direction.

Leverage changes during news, weekends and holidays

XM reserves the right to change margin requirements temporarily. Typical situations, as of the time of writing, include:

  • Major scheduled events: ahead of events judged to carry extreme volatility risk (major elections, referendums, central bank emergencies), XM may raise margin requirements on affected instruments and announce it by email and on its website.
  • Holiday periods and year-end: around Christmas and New Year, when liquidity is thin, margin requirements may be increased temporarily across many instruments.
  • Individual instruments: specific symbols can be switched to higher margin or close-only mode during unusual market conditions.

Routine news such as a monthly jobs report does not usually trigger a leverage change at XM, but spreads can widen sharply and execution can slip around any release. A temporary margin increase applies to positions you already hold, not only new ones — so if you are heavily leveraged going into an announced margin change, your free margin can shrink before the event even starts. Read XM’s notification emails; they state the exact times and instruments.

How to change your leverage in the Members Area

You can request a leverage change yourself at any time. It does not require opening a new account:

  1. Log in to the XM Members Area.
  2. Go to My Accounts and find the trading account you want to change.
  3. Open the account’s options menu and click Change Leverage.
  4. Select the new leverage from the drop-down list (only values allowed for your equity tier and account type are shown).
  5. Click Request (or Submit) and wait for the confirmation email.

Changes are usually processed quickly, often within minutes to a few hours during business days — as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site. If you have open positions, lowering your leverage increases their margin requirement immediately once applied, so check your free margin before submitting the request.

Limitations, fees and risks

High maximum leverage is a headline feature, but there are real limitations you should understand before relying on it.

  • Equity tiers can bite unexpectedly. A common complaint is “my leverage dropped from 1:1000 to 1:500 without warning”. In most cases the trader’s combined equity simply crossed $40,000 — often after a large deposit or a winning streak. XM applies the tier automatically and the margin on open positions rises at that moment. If you plan to deposit a large sum, check your resulting tier first and consider whether your open positions can tolerate the higher margin requirement.
  • Temporary margin increases around events can trigger stop-outs. Example scenario: you hold large gold positions at 1:1000 and XM announces increased margin requirements for a holiday period. When the change takes effect, your margin level drops. If it falls below the stop-out threshold, positions are closed automatically — even with no adverse price move. Reducing position size before announced changes is the only reliable protection.
  • Not every instrument follows your account leverage. Indices, energies, shares and most metals other than gold use fixed margin rules. Traders who assume “my account is 1:1000 so everything is 1:1000” often miscalculate position size and get margin-called on their first index trade. Check the symbol specification every time.
  • Overnight costs still apply. Leverage does not remove swap/rollover charges on positions held overnight, and triple swaps apply on the usual rollover day. Large leveraged positions mean large swap amounts, which quietly erode equity on longer holds.
  • High leverage amplifies losses, not skill. Leverage lets a small account open a large position; it does not change the odds. Most retail accounts that blow up do so through oversized positions, and 1:1000 makes oversizing effortless.

FAQ

Q. Why did my XM leverage change without me doing anything?

A. The two usual reasons: your total equity across all accounts crossed a tier threshold (automatic and permanent until equity changes again), or XM temporarily increased margin requirements around a major event or holiday period (announced by email, reverted afterwards). Check your Members Area notifications and inbox, including spam folders.

Q. What leverage does XM offer on gold?

A. On XM Global accounts, gold generally follows your account leverage setting up to the maximum allowed for your equity tier — up to 1:1000 as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site. Other metals and CFD classes use fixed margin requirements. Under CySEC or ASIC entities, retail gold leverage is far lower due to regulatory caps.

Q. Does XM reduce leverage before every news release?

A. No. Routine economic releases do not normally trigger margin changes, although spreads widen and slippage increases. Temporary margin increases are applied around exceptional scheduled events and thin-liquidity holiday periods, and XM announces them in advance with specific times and instruments.

Q. I requested a leverage change hours ago and it is still pending. What should I do?

A. Requests are usually processed quickly on business days, but can take longer at weekends or during busy periods. If nothing has happened after one business day, contact XM live chat from the Members Area with your account number. Also check whether the leverage you requested is actually available for your current equity tier — requests above your tier’s cap cannot be applied.

Q. If my leverage is lowered, will my open positions be closed?

A. Not directly. Lower leverage raises the margin requirement of open positions, which lowers your margin level. Positions are closed only if your margin level then falls to the stop-out threshold. If you have ample free margin, nothing happens; if you are heavily leveraged, forced closure is possible.

Summary

XM’s leverage runs up to 1:1000 on the XM Global (Belize FSC) entity, tiered down to 1:500, 1:200 and 1:100 as your total equity grows — as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site. Gold typically follows your account leverage, which is unusual and attractive but dangerous in volatile conditions, while most other CFDs use fixed margin rules. Leverage can also be raised or cut temporarily around exceptional events and holidays, affecting positions you already hold. You can change your own leverage in a few clicks via My Accounts → Change Leverage in the Members Area. Entities regulated by CySEC, ASIC and the Belize FSC apply different caps and bonus rules, so verify your entity’s exact conditions on XM’s official website before trading. Risk warning: CFDs and forex are leveraged products; losses can exceed your deposits and a high percentage of retail investor accounts lose money. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.
