Quick answer: how to set up XM MT5
To use MT5 with XM, download the platform from the “Platforms” (or “Downloads”) section of your XM Members Area, then log in with your MT5 account ID, your trading password, and the exact server name shown in your XM welcome email — for example a server in the format “XMGlobal-MT5 2”. If you do not want to install anything, the MT5 WebTrader on XM’s website lets you log in from a browser with the same credentials. The most common setup failure is picking the wrong server from the list or using an MT4 account ID on MT5, so check both before you type your password.
This page is information only, not investment advice. Note that XM does not accept residents of certain jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, Israel and Iran — you must check your own eligibility and local regulations before opening an account.
Downloading XM MT5 and logging in (PC, Mac, mobile)
Step 1: Make sure your account is actually an MT5 account
XM offers both MT4 and MT5. Your login ID only works on the platform it was created for. When you open an account, the registration form asks you to choose “MT4” or “MT5” along with the account type. If you already have an MT4 account and want MT5, you open an additional account from the Members Area — you do not convert the old one.
- Log in to the XM Members Area at xm.com.
- Click “Open Additional Account” (visible on the dashboard near your account list).
- Select “MT5” as the platform, choose your account type and base currency, then confirm.
- Check your email: XM sends a message containing your new MT5 ID and the exact server name. Keep this email — the server name in it is the one you must select later.
Step 2: Download and install MT5
- In the Members Area, open the “Platforms” menu (on some layouts it appears as “Downloads”).
- Choose “MT5 for PC” (Windows), “MT5 for Mac”, or the “MT5 for Android” / “MT5 for iOS” links for mobile. On mobile you will be sent to the official MetaQuotes app in your app store — that is normal; XM does not publish a separate app.
- Run the installer and accept the default options. On Windows the terminal opens automatically when installation finishes.
Step 3: Log in to your live or demo account
- In MT5, open the “File” menu and click “Login to Trade Account”.
- Enter your MT5 ID in the “Login” field.
- Enter your trading password (the one you set when opening the account, not your Members Area password — they can be different).
- In the “Server” field, type the server name from your welcome email and select the exact match from the dropdown, then click “OK”.
- Check the bottom-right corner of the terminal: if you see data transfer numbers (e.g. “12/528 kb”), you are connected. “No connection” or “Invalid account” means something in the three fields is wrong.
Where to find your server name if you lost the email
You do not need to guess from the long list of servers inside MT5. Your correct server is shown in two places:
- The original “Welcome” or account confirmation email from XM — search your inbox for “XM” and your account ID.
- The Members Area dashboard: your account list shows each account’s ID, platform and server. If it is not visible, contact XM support via the “Help Center” or live chat and they will confirm it after verifying your identity.
XM MT5 server names typically follow a pattern such as “XMGlobal-MT5” followed by a number, but the exact name depends on your account and the XM entity you registered with, so always use the one assigned to you rather than one you saw in a screenshot online.
Account types you can run on MT5
The figures below are as of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site, because conditions change and differ by XM entity.
| Account type | Contract size (1 lot) | Minimum lot | Typical minimum deposit | Maximum leverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | 1,000 units | 0.01 (MT5) | $5 | Up to 1:1000 (entity-dependent; far lower under some regulators) |
| Standard | 100,000 units | 0.01 | $5 | Up to 1:1000 (entity-dependent) |
| XM Ultra Low | 100,000 units (Standard Ultra) | 0.01 | $5 | Up to 1:1000 (entity-dependent) |
On regulation: the Trading Point group operates several entities — regulated by CySEC, ASIC and the Belize FSC among others — and they serve different regions. Leverage caps, bonus availability and product ranges differ by entity, so the numbers above may not apply to you. Verify which entity serves your region and its conditions on XM’s official website.

Using the MT5 web terminal and fixing common login problems
Logging in to the MT5 WebTrader
The web terminal is useful on a work computer, a Chromebook, or any machine where you cannot install software. Charting and order functions are close to the desktop version, but custom indicators and EAs (automated strategies) do not run in the browser.
- Go to xm.com and open the “Platforms” menu.
- Click “MT5 WebTrader”.
- In the login window, choose “Login to Live Account” (or demo), enter your MT5 ID and trading password.
- Select your assigned server from the dropdown and confirm.
- Your balance should appear in the “Toolbox” panel at the bottom. If it shows zero unexpectedly, check that you logged in to the correct account ID — many people hold several XM accounts.
What if: “Invalid account” or “No connection” after entering everything
This is the most common setup problem, and it almost always comes down to one of four causes:
- MT4 ID on MT5. The platforms are separate. Check your welcome email: it states which platform the ID belongs to.
- Wrong server selected. Picking “XMGlobal-MT5” when your account lives on a numbered variant (or vice versa) produces “Invalid account”. Match the email exactly.
- Trading password vs Members Area password. If you reset one, the other does not change. You can reset the trading password from the Members Area: open your account’s options menu and choose “Change Trading Password”.
- Firewall or network block. Corporate networks sometimes block MT5’s ports. The web terminal usually still works because it runs over standard browser connections.
What if: you can log in but every order button is grey (“read-only” mode)
If the terminal connects but you cannot place orders, you are usually logged in with the “investor password” (a view-only password) instead of the trading password. Log out via “File” → “Login to Trade Account” and re-enter the trading password. Two other possibilities: your account was archived after a long period of inactivity with a zero balance (XM support can reactivate or you open a new account from the Members Area), or your profile is not yet fully verified — upload your ID and proof of address under “Verify Account” in the Members Area and wait for confirmation.
What if: your symbols or balance look wrong after logging in
MT5 hides most instruments by default. Right-click inside “Market Watch” and choose “Show All” (or “Symbols” to pick groups) to see the full list for your account type. Micro account symbols often carry a suffix, so a chart template saved from another account may not find its instrument. If the balance differs from the Members Area figure, confirm the account ID in the top-left of the terminal window — again, multiple accounts are the usual culprit.
Limitations, fees and risks
- Leverage cuts both ways. High leverage available under some XM entities magnifies losses as fast as gains. A small price move against a large position can wipe out an account. Nothing about this setup guide reduces market risk.
- Inactivity and conversion costs. As of the time of writing — verify on XM’s official site — XM applies an inactivity fee to dormant accounts after a set period, and deposits or withdrawals in a currency different from your account’s base currency involve conversion at the applicable rate.
- No MT4↔MT5 transfers of open positions. You cannot move trades between platforms, and internal transfers between accounts can affect bonus balances where bonuses apply. If a bonus disappeared after an internal transfer, that is usually the promotion’s terms working as written — read them in the Members Area or ask support before transferring, not after.
- Web terminal limits. No EAs, no custom indicators, and sessions end when the browser closes. Pending orders remain on the server, but anything requiring the terminal to be running will not execute from a closed browser tab.
- Entity differences. Bonuses, maximum leverage and even available account types depend on which regulated entity serves you. Do not assume conditions in a review (including this one) match your account.
FAQ
Q. My XM MT5 server name is not in the dropdown list. What do I do?
A. Type the server name manually in the “Server” field and press Enter — MT5 scans for it and adds it. If it still is not found, you may have an MT4 account, or the name has a typo. Confirm the exact name in your welcome email or with XM support.
Q. Can I use the same login for MT4 and MT5?
A. No. Each account ID works only on the platform it was created for. You can hold both an MT4 and an MT5 account under one XM profile and move funds between them via “Internal Transfer” in the Members Area, subject to any bonus terms.
Q. Is the XM MT5 mobile app different from the regular MetaTrader 5 app?
A. No. XM uses the official MetaQuotes MT5 app. Inside the app you search for XM’s server name (as given in your welcome email), then log in with your ID and trading password.
Q. I forgot my trading password. Will resetting it close my open positions?
A. No. Resetting the trading password from the Members Area (“Change Trading Password” in your account’s options) does not touch positions or balance. You simply need to log in again on every device with the new password.
Q. Does the demo account use the same server as the live account?
A. Usually not — demo accounts sit on separate demo servers. The confirmation email for each account states its own server, so keep both emails if you run live and demo side by side.
Summary
Setting up XM MT5 comes down to three details: the right platform (MT5, not MT4), the right password (trading, not Members Area or investor), and the exact server name from your welcome email. Download the terminal from the Members Area “Platforms” section, log in via “File” → “Login to Trade Account”, and keep the WebTrader as a backup for machines where you cannot install software. If anything looks off — grey order buttons, missing symbols, a mismatched balance — the cause is almost always one of the credential or account-ID issues above rather than a fault with the platform. Conditions such as minimum deposits, leverage and fees change and vary by XM entity, so confirm them on the official site before funding an account.
